BILL BABOON

Bill solo

Bill Baboon (solo)

BILL BABOON

born in '69, the year that the Woodstock wind blew over the surface of the world and its spirit of freedom reached out and touched the young spirits
in the land of wooden shoes, tulips and bicycles.

BILL BABOON was born as Willem Venema, the third son out of four sons.
His dad worked as a builder, his mother was a housewife, and the countryside of Groningen with its beautiful meadows was the stage.
Little Bill was a dreamer and a reader.
When he heard Bruce Springsteen he wanted to make music too and taught himself to play harmonica whilst listening to the 'Nebraska' album.
Unfortunately there wasn’t anyone in the neighborhood playing the guitar so he started to sing and play accordion.
Years later, when he was 24, he bought his first guitar.
With vocals, harmonica, guitars, bass, piano, drums, and a sad and lost trombone BILL BABOON recorded a free rock album
on four tracks in 2001, in 2003 he some acoustic stuff.
Inspired by 60/70 rock, folk, classical music, jazz, blues, world-music (including music from outer space), J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven,
Beefheart, Black Mountain, JJ Cale, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Ornette Coleman, Cuby and the Blizzards, Miles Davis, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd,
Focus, King Crimson, Thelonious Monk, Morphine, Ravel, Bruce Springsteen, Henry Threadgill, Young, Zappa, Led Zeppelin, and many, many more..
Besides being a musician BILL BABOON has also been acting in a Dutch TV series where he played a poor street musician with not even a dog at his side.
Other national musical performances include playing several times in the famous cultural music café 'the Amer', double concerts with songwriters
Bill Parker (USA), Inge van Calcar and The Good Case, and at ‘Ruigoord’ in Amsterdam and at the birthday party of The Happy Hooker.
Most of the time Bill takes two guitars to a gig: his nylon string classical guitar and a western guitar.
His repertoire is very varied, the lyrics are often interpreted as heavy or sad, but Bill has a good sense of humor,
no show is ever the same and there is always time for a good joke or a funny story.
SCHOOL OF ROCK! Bill started to teach guitar to children, because when he was asked to teach, he discovered that he had a talent for that job.
Initially it was a financially a difficult time. I was so hard up that he had to copy his students’ books.
But a few years later he slowly got more students and also started to teach drums and bass guitar and invented DE WISSELBAND for the kids.
This is a band which changes constantly on stage, so all students get some time to play live (almost) every month.
Since 2007 DE WISSELBAND is a support act for many famous local bands, maybe you can imagine
how much love and work is necessary to make this formula work.
Fortunately the local hotel ( IRISH/DUTCH HOTEL IN 'T HOLT, ZUIDHORN ) is well known for its hospitality and they really like music.
At the moment Bill is working on two new albums.
And guess what? It’s going to be an experimental electric soundscape album and a good old fashioned acoustic one.
